Abstract

The study examined modelling ChatGPT for unbiased news framing analysis of the 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election in Nigerian newspapers with a view to determining the types of frames reportage used forms of coverage and the dominant frames used, Punchng.com, Vanguard and DailyTrust.com online newspapers, using ChatGPT as a tool. The objectives of the study were to (i) identify the types of frames used (ii) the forms of coverage used and (iii) different dominant frames used for 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election in Nigerian newspapers using ChatGPT as a tool. Content analysis was used as a research method for this study. The population of this study involved all Nigerian online newspapers however, the sample size of this study were three Nigerian online newspapers; Punchng.com Vanguard and DailyTrust.com. Purposive sampling technique was used to select a total of 150 publications from the trio of Punchng.com, Vanguardngr.com and DailyTrust.comonline newspapers which were content analysed within study period of March to April, 2023. Coding sheet was used to collect data from these three newspapers, which was then analysed with statistical method indicating frequency, percentages and charts. The study found out that Vanguardngr.com reported more forms of news, while Punchng.com used more frames and dominant frames as identified by ChatGPT. The research concluded that the framing and assessment of the 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election in respect of creating responsibility and awareness by Punchng.com, Vanguard and DailyTrust.com online newspapers using ChatGPT created awareness in the minds of the readers through the use of sensitive words in their publications. The study however recommended that these three newspapers should do more by critically analyse, interpret and investigate issues that are of human interest, report election news positively, cautious of the language and words to be used in reportage.
